Are you sure your product is ready to enter the Chinese market? An error on the label can lead to problems during customs clearance and cause shipment delays. That is why we have compiled answers to the most common questions from our clients. They were answered by GPI expert Madi Baidolda.
Who regulates product labeling? Several authorities are responsible for this process in China. The National Health Commission develops food safety standards and labeling requirements. The General Administration of Customs of China inspects imported goods at the border, including compliance with labeling requirements. Once products enter the market, supervision is carried out by the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).
What information must be included? The product name, ingredients, net volume or weight, country of origin, production date and shelf life, and storage conditions must be indicated. The label must also include details of the importer or distributor in China, nutritional information, allergen information, and the foreign manufacturer’s registration number in the GACC system.
What language should the label be in? The label must be provided in Chinese. This can be done either by applying a Chinese-language sticker or by producing the entire packaging in Chinese. In either case, the information must comply with applicable requirements and correspond to the information on the original packaging.
When should companies start preparing for the new requirements? Now. The new GB 7718-2025 and GB 28050-2025 standards will come into effect on March 16, 2027. An approximately 18-month transition period has been provided for adaptation, so preparation should not be postponed.
Are there any special requirements? Yes. For example, fresh and frozen meat products are subject to stricter labeling requirements for both outer and inner packaging. Requirements may also differ for products that are not intended for direct sale to consumers, such as food ingredients.
Not sure whether your products comply with China’s requirements? Do not put your shipment at risk.
